An openly gay man as President of Ireland?

The novelist Colm Toibin wrote a wonderful article in this week’s Guardian newspaper about David Norris’s chances of being elected the president of the Republic of Ireland. If he is selected in the poll which will take place on 27th October, Norris will become the world’s first openly gay head of state.
We love the matter of fact way in which most people in Ireland are approaching Norris’s sexuality. As Tobin says “Being gay in Ireland is a bit like having red hair and freckles. It is an interesting and slightly unusual part of life.”
How refreshing that the decision on whether Norris is elected will, on the whole, be made on his character and ability to represent the nation, rather on whom he chooses to love.
We wish him every success.
